In continuation to the topic I presented on Wednesday, I would like to add an update that may bring more ears to the table. To remind you all on what I presented on, I talked about how the Austin DNA lab had closed this past June due to a number of issues. Not only has the closing affected those who await in jail; but also, the solution to this situation may cause a problem for all taxpayers here in Austin. Katie Hall of American-Statesman covers more in detail on the costs it may take in her post, "Gaffes at Austin DNA lab could cost taxpayers up to $14 million".
She talks about how the lab closed because of mishandling of DNA tests which has led officials question about any wrongful convictions. Now, all of those tests need to be retested. Katie includes different cost options, both of which will result in a significant rise in taxes. On the higher end, it will cost up to $14 million to retest all of the DNA samples. That cost does not include for any further work that needs to be done, just to cover for the damage. I think this article is important for everyone to read and be aware of...I personally question why the citizens of Austin will be punished for the lab's mistakes!
